The museum branch conducts research on the history of Krakow during the German occupation and Stalinism, and cooperates with the Małopolska Association of History Enthusiasts ‘Rawelin’, popularising knowledge about this period. The result of this cooperation was the opening of an air-raid shelter in 2006. The building at 2 Pomorska Street, known as the Silesian House, was built between 1931 and 1936 as a hostel for Silesian youth. Between 1939 and 1945, it was the headquarters of the Gestapo in Krakow and a place of interrogation, imprisonment and torture for thousands of people. After the war, the building came under the care of the National Defence League, and since 1981 it has been the only museum in Krakow commemorating World War II.

Estimated time of the visit: 30 min.
